Komodo Island: Home of the Komodo Dragon

Updated July 2026

Komodo Island is the namesake island of Komodo National Park, home to wild Komodo dragons that can only be viewed on a ranger-guided trek from the Loh Liang park post. The most common way to visit is a Komodo Island day trip by speedboat from Labuan Bajo, which typically arrives mid-morning, around 10:30, for a guided walk. Independent access without a ranger isn't permitted, since the dragons are wild and potentially dangerous.

What to Expect on a Komodo Island Visit

Komodo dragons are the world's largest living lizards, and Komodo Island along with neighboring Rinca are essentially the only places to see them in the wild. Rangers lead every group on marked trails from the Loh Liang ranger station, since dragons roam freely and visitors are never allowed to wander alone.

Treks range from short, easy walks near the station to longer routes over savanna hills, depending on what your guide offers on the day and how much time your boat schedule allows. Along the way it's common to spot deer, wild buffalo, and various birds that share the island with the dragons.

Komodo Island also has a small village of local fishing families near the park post, plus a market of simple souvenir stalls — one of the few inhabited spots inside the otherwise protected park.

How to Get to Komodo Island from Labuan Bajo

  1. Fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo, then plan for an early start the next morning — most Komodo Island trips are one full day out on the water.
  2. Head to Labuan Bajo harbor for departure; Komodo Island sits deeper inside the national park, so it's usually reached mid-morning rather than as the very first stop.
  3. Travel by speedboat cruising at 25–35 knots through the park's channels, arriving at the Loh Liang ranger post where all dragon treks begin.
  4. Our Komodo speedboat open trip includes Komodo Island as the third stop, arriving around 10:30 after Padar and Pink Beach. A ranger-guided trek is part of the visit. Flat rate IDR 1,400,000/pax, daily departures, pickup ~05:30, WhatsApp booking only at +6285190096797.

Best Time to Visit and What to Bring

Dragons are generally easier to spot in the morning and late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and they're more active around the station and waterholes. A mid-morning arrival, as on the standard day-trip schedule, still gives good sighting chances.

Wear closed, sturdy shoes for the trek, bring water, and follow your ranger's instructions at all times — never approach or feed a dragon. Long trousers are a sensible extra layer on the trail.

Komodo National Park entrance fees apply on top of any tour cost: Rp250,000 for Indonesian citizens (WNI) and Rp400,000 for foreign visitors (WNA), paid at the gate.
